Five Fan Favorites: March Edition

Hello, Internet! Alright, I want to try out something new.

I haven't been posting as often as I should, so to make it up to you, I'm going to do a monthly segment called Five Fan Favorites. This segment is based on the game Fast Five Favorites (which you may recognize from Nicola Yoon's Everything, Everything) but with my own little twist. This segment will allow a little peek into my brain, and this is how it works:

The way the original game works is you name five categories and you choose your favorite in that category. The way my version works is I have five set categories: favorite book of the month, favorite book quote of the month, favorite book cover of the month, and favorite word of the month. Each of these categories will have a description of why it is my favorite, so you'll get to see what goes on in my mind. I'm excited about this, and I hope you are too. Let's get going with the first ever segment of Five Fan Favorites!

Favorite Book: My favorite book that I read in the month of March was Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. I love this book with every being in my body. While most would pay attention to the romance aspect of this book, I paid attention to the character of Maddy herself, mostly because I related to her. My life is categorically boring. Nothing noteworthy goes on. I search for the Great Manifesto, but it's likely that I'll never find it. It is in this way that I relate to the main character. She has a disease that prevents her from going outside and living her life. While I don't have a chronic illness, I have the same sense of suffocation, except my cage is mundanity. But unlike Maddy, I can't do anything about it because I'm afraid that the world would chew me up and spit me out the moment I tried to do something out of the ordinary, and that's just the way it is. I wish I could be as brave as Maddy, but at the moment, it looks like I'm stuck this way.

Favorite Book Quote: At the moment, I'm infatuated by this quote.
"And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

My interpretation of this quote is that we as humans spend a lot of time in the past. We are boats that are carried back into the past by a stream or ocean of "what if" and regret. But we need tho focus on the present because that's what's happening right now and you can't change the past unless you have a time machine, but I can't even begin to explain the risks that come with that. So instead of thinking about what you could have done, think about what you're doing right now.

Favorite Book Cover: My favorite book cover this month is Saving Hamlet by Molly Booth. I mean, look at that cover! It's gorgeous! It's simple but pretty, and I just really love the design. The font is my favorite part, and the little crown sitting on top of the title is really cute.

Favorite Word: I'm very interested in the word menagerie. It's such an elegant word. Menagerie. It feels like I should be lounging on a chaise with a glass of champagne in my hand. Of course, the meaning is not my favorite. A menagerie is "a collection of captive animals, frequently exotic, kept for display." The idea of animals being kept solely for human enjoyment is kind of messed up to me, but the word itself is beautiful, even though the meaning may not be.

So that is the first edition of Five Fan Favorites! I hope you enjoyed! Thanks for reading,

-Ari
