Fairest by Marissa Meyer Book Review

Warning: this book contains spoilers for the book Fairest by Marissa Meyer

Hello, internet! I am a huge fan of the Lunar Chronicles. I had been putting off reading Fairest because it just seemed like it wasn't my type of book. But recently I was traveling by airplane, and I get motion sickness when I read while in motion (duh), so I decided to borrow some audio books from the library. So while I was at the airport, I was browsing through the audio books online, and Fairest popped up. Now, here's my deal with audio books. I will listen to them, but I will only listen to books I have read before. I want my first experience with a book to be physically holding and reading it, but I made an exception with Fairest because I was at the airport, and to be honest, my backpack probably wouldn't be able to take one more book. So, I saved the audio book to Overdrive, and went on my way.

So this book is basically about Queen Levana's past, when she was a child and before she became the Queen of Luna. In this book, she must deal with falling in love with a guard, and her cruel sister, Channary. Guys, if you though Levana was mean, get ready for her sister.

I enjoyed this book very much. It is wonderfully written, and just has so much emotion and excitement. But Levana's character personality and decisions make me shake my head, cringe, scream, and think "what the actual heck." But that's what makes it so good! I believe that a good book makes you feel intense feelings, and that's exactly what this book gave me. I give it 4 1/2 stars, not because it was lacking something, but because there are books out there that are better. Marissa Meyer did an amazing job at creating a backstory for Levana.

The next section will contain spoilers, so read at your own risk.

I will make my opinion clear and to the point: LEVANA IS INSANE!
I knew that she was crazy before, but the things she has done just make me cringe and shake my head. She was relatively normal for the first chapter, but then we met Evret Hayle, and it is explained that Levana has a crush on him, though he is ten years older. Now, I don't have a problem with that age gap. I ship Cresswell and Malec. The problem was that he did not have feelings for her, yet she believed he was just being 'noble' because of his wife, Solstice, who died during childbirth. The craziest part is that because she believed it would help Evret realize that he actually does love her, she glamours herself too look like his dead wife and manipulates him to kiss her.

I actually was speechless.

Inside of my mind, I was cringing, gagging, and screaming. But it gets worse. She asks him to marry her, and she acts like he has a choice in the matter, when she would obviously force him to say yes, even if he wanted to deny.

They get married, years pass, yadda yadda, she 'kills' Selene, blah blah blah.

Annnnnnnnd she assassinated Evret.

Yep. She has him killed because she is planning for an alliance with Earth, which requires her to marry someone.

SHE
IS
MENTAL!!!

I was talking to my parabatai, who has already read this, and she said "That's the point of the book. To show that Levana is crazy" It just leaves me so speechless, because you have to have a truly messed up life to be that insane. Props to Marissa Meyer. I could not stop listening to the book, it was truly amazing.

Well, there you have it. Thanks for reading,

-Ari
